We’ve been brewing better-for-you bevs for a heck of a long time now. From kombucha to sugar-free soft drinks and everything in between, we think we’ve just about nailed the art of making bevs that pack a functional punch.
It all comes down to our ingredients.
One of those ingredients in ACV. This might bring back memories of your nan handing you a small glass full of truly god-awful liquid, claiming “a shot a day keeps the doctor away”. But is ACV actually any good for you? And can it taste less eye-wateringly acidic? Let’s find out.
What is ACV?
Apple cider vinegar (AKA ACV) is a type of vinegar made from fermented apple juice. The process of making ACV includes crushing apples and squeezing out the juice.
Bacteria and yeast are added to the liquid to start the fermentation process, which converts the sugars in the juice into alcohol. In the second stage, the alcohol is converted into vinegar by acetic acid-forming bacteria. The acetic acid gives the vinegar its strong, sour aroma and flavour and makes for a pretty strong-tasting experience if you were to sip (or shot) ACV on its own.
While ACV is used a lot in salad dressings and cooking these days, it has been used traditionally as medicine for centuries! There are even mentions of ACV going all the way back to Ancient Greece, thought to be used by the father of modern medicine, Hippocrates. Who knows if that’s 100% accurate, but it’s safe to say ACV has been around for yonks!
Is ACV good for you?
If old mate Hippocrates can’t convince you of ACV’s benefits, let’s dive deeper into why people love a healthy dose of apple cider vinegar!
1. ACV may help stimulate the production of stomach acid and digestive enzymes, which can aid in the breakdown and absorption of nutrients from food.
2. The acetic acid in apple cider vinegar may slow down the digestion of starch, leading to lower rises in blood sugar after meals, which may improve overall digestion and metabolic health.
3. ACV is a fermented product and, therefore, contains prebiotics that can help promote a healthy gut microbiota. A balanced gut microbiota can improve digestion and overall health.
Where do you find ACV?
You can take ACV the old-school way with the eye-watering shot of fermented apple juice you can get in the supermarket…
… Or you can sip on one of the many Remedy Drinks crafted with ACV.
Remedy Switchel ACV has been around as a traditional homemade drink for centuries. In the early 1700s, it became known in the USA as “Haymakers Punch” when it was embraced by farmers as a source of hydration during long days of hard yakka harvesting crops.
Turns out the farmers were onto something! With a hint of sweet, a touch of sour and a spicy ginger kick, Remedy Switchel ACV is your new tasty go-to for your daily dose of ACV.
If switchel isn’t your jam, you can always try our fan fave, sugar-free soda, Sodaly. Unlike most sodas and soft drinks, Sodaly is made with a base of apple cider vinegar and flavoured with 100% natural ingredients, making it the perfect refresher for any occasion. Safe to say we are Sodaly Addicted.
And if you’re after ACV in a more traditional shot-able form, Remedy Digestion Shot has your name written all over it. A tangy but tasty, mini but mighty bev, it contains one shot of ACV to help aid digestion, real ginger to pack an anti-inflammatory and antioxidative punch, and oligosaccharides, a natural food source for the good bacteria in your gut.
