Is Kombucha Keto?

Is kombucha keto? Is kombucha suitable for diabetics? Is kombucha safe to drink while pregnant or breastfeeding? These are questions we get asked juuuuust about every day.

We think it's because Kombucha is still a bit of a grey area for so many people, whether you're up for taking a new kind of bev for a spin or not! It's not as straightforward as a soft drink (higher in sugar = no good for keto) or a traditional energy drink (higher cals = no good for keto), and the booch brewing process leaves a lot of people thinking it's this complicated, woo-woo drink you'll never be able to classify as A-OK for keto or diabetics or pregnancy.

So naturally, everyone has a LOT of questions about whether they can drink kombucha.

Today, we're tackling the big ol' question: Is kombucha keto?

What is "keto"?

Keto has been popping up all over the place for the last ten or so years, so you might already know the gist. But in case you don't, or in case you've only heard about it from a maybe-not-so-reliable influencer on the 'gram (eek!), let's give a quick overview.

Keto (short for "ketogenic") is a type of diet that cuts out carbs and sugars. The idea is that this will stop your blood sugar from spiking and get your body to enter a state of ketosis. This is where your body doesn't have enough carbs to burn for energy, so it burns fat instead.

Let's be super duper clear: We're not health professionals! The keto diet has been pretty hotly contested in the health world, and we're not here to give our two cents on whether it's good or bad or anything in between.

We're just here to answer one of our most frequently asked questions, so pretty please consult a health professional if you want answers as to whether it's right for you!

What is kombucha?

As we said up top, people ask if kombucha is keto because they don't really know what kombucha is or what it's made from.

Here's a bit of a rundown on what kombucha is and how it's made.

Kombucha is a fermented tea made from organic green and black tea leaves.

To make it, we start by brewing a (very) big pot of tea. We add our SCOBY, or mother culture, and pop it in a temperature-controlled room for 30 days (this allows us to brew out all the sugar and convert it into happy, healthy organic acids). We add some extra flavour with 100% natural ingredients and then pop it in a can or bottle to send out to our Remedy lovers (AKA you!).

That's the short version (for the long version, click here). But now that you're up to speed on all things kombucha, do you think kombucha is keto? Any guesses?

Let's find out together!

Is kombucha keto?

Yes. Remedy Kombucha is keto-friendly.

For the smarty pants who know how kombucha is made, their top concern is around sugar. You need sugar to make kombucha. It's an essential ingredient for fermentation. Sugar is no bueno for keto.

However, during our 30-day brew, all the sugar is converted into organic acids, leaving no sugar behind. This means Remedy Kombucha contains no sugar, for real, and is suitable for the keto diet.

We can only really speak for our booch because there can be a pretty big difference between how kombucha is made and what ingredients are used, which can change the calorie and sugar count (and therefore make it keto / non-keto friendly).

If you're not sure if kombucha is keto-friendly, flip the can or bottle around and have a squizz at the nutrition info on the back. You should be able to find both the sugar and carbohydrate content. For Remedy Kombucha (this one's Ginger Lemon, to be super specific), it looks a little like this:

You want to hone in on the carbohydrate and sugar levels. On our booch, this will read:

1. CARBOHYDRATES: LESS THAN 1g

2. SUGARS: 0.0g

Easy peasy, Ginger-Lemon squeezy!
